Life|ware: Media Center Edition, by Exceptional Innovation, is software that works with Windows® XP Media Center to merge digital entertainment and home control into a single, seamless experience.

It seems the ability to ‘extend’ device control could be due to their “Life|link” product - “Web Services for Devices Compatability“.

Web Services for Devices is a Microsoft standard poised to become the predominant plug-n-play technology for controlling home devices over a network. It delivers true plug-n-play functionality in an Ethernet device connected environment.

Life|link converts the programming interface for a controller (such as a security system) or a device (such as a light or audio switcher) into a Web Service Device which can be implemented via the Ethernet connection to the customer’s in-home server.

Convergence around this area I blogged about also back here. Seems I need to keep an eye on this ‘Web Services for Devices’.

In my opinion Environmental Control Systems continue to be one of the BIG need areas for people living with disability. It’s also the area that I think offers the best ROI in terms of life-benefit outcomes. Yet remains way beyond the reach (sorry, unintended bad pun) of most. I’m hoping the build up of this ‘convenience technology‘ over time will help this.
